Building the Interstate Highway
AASHO road test site in 1956-1962
From 1956-1966, we use that time to set up standard rules; Road test for safety from ASSHO (American Association of State Highway Official); For the first time woman were hired by the state engineer department to help design the highway law.
In order to have a best quality of trademark sign, shield, steel, gravel, sand for each mile of road they need millions of dollars. American has to set aside 1,600,000 acres of land, an average of 40 acres for each mile. In 1995, they all began a meeting to determine the design and future material of the highway. Their first decision is building 7 miles of test road near Ottawa, Illinois, which cost 27,000,000. To test the most practical design, material, and method of building the highway. The track was two lanes wide; curving and straight; half of it was paved with concrete and the other half with paved with asphalt; having 16 bridges; 50,000 scale down model in 836 separate sections. During the Interstate Highway decade, women have chances to show themselves as an engineering technician; Mary E. Peter was the first women to be Chief of the Federal Highway Administration.
The work was progressing so quickly for the first ten years, which no other times American has built as many highways as that time. In the year of 1960's and 1970's Highway revolt are growing in some major cities such as: Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles...The reason of the revolution were it destroy neighborhood, destroy habitat, environment effect, and people who live by the highway was being bothered by noise and light of constant traffic.
Until today, 99 percent of the system are finished. It keeps the entire city and town of The United State connects. It makes the suburban lifestyle being more possible, because of the proliferation of businesses along the highway.
